Part of our mission at MFGS is to introduce new guitarists for you to see along with some of our favorites. For this year we have a guitarist who is new to us, but not at all new to the world of fingerstyle guitar. We are introducing the highly acclaimed German guitarist Peter Finger to our MFGS audience. Peter put out one of his first CD’s on Stephan Grossman’s ‘Kicking Mule’ record label at age 18 in 1974. Although quartered in Europe, Peter has toured extensively throughout the world, and based on the comments of Bensusan, D’Agostino, Juber, Emmaneul, Taylor & Renbourn, amongst others, Peter Finger clearly is in the elite class of fingerstylists in the world. Peter uniquely plays with 5 steel fingerpicks and has a very dynamic style yet has the ability to elicit very subtle tonal qualities from his guitar.

“Finger’s solo guitar work isn’t widely known in the U.S., but those lucky enough to discover him are astounded by the power and precision of his playing
Acoustic Guitar Magazine
“Peter Finger combines awesome chops with an advanced compositional sensibility that puts him in the highest echelon of contemporary acoustic guitarists.“ Laurence Juber
“Peter Finger is a living legend in the world of acoustic guitar music.
Martin Taylor
Peter will host a guitar workshop for players of all levels from 3pm-5pm on the day of the show.
In answering a question about what he tries to accomplish in his workshops Finger states ...
" A lot of times, you’re faced with a group of students that includes beginners as well as players who are almost professionals. I try to give a lot of general advice about topics such as interpretation of a theme, dynamic expression, or the art of a composition. It’s not just about technique on the guitar, but also about playing in a musical way. Creating good tone is also part of it. Sometimes it’s mostly about stimulating the student. Many times I’ve heard that participants get a lot out of just watching me interpret a piece. Workshops are mostly about inspiration and motivation. You can’t really improve your technique in just a few days, this will take years of practice, but the motivation is important"
Cost of workshop is $40. Discounted concert tickets are $10 for workshop attendees. Workshop seating is limited.
Call 248-646-4030 to reserve a seat @ the workshop or for concert info.

April 17th
From Rome Italy,
Guitar Republic

@ First United Methodist Church, Ferndale.
Well, this group is new but surely you remember our Italian friend, guitarist and composer Pino Forastiere.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOgNfxURpzw&fmt=18 Classically trained at a conservatory in Rome, Pino was performing his studied repertoire until he heard a CD of the late American guitarist Michael Hedges. This was an epiphany for Pino and it created an opportunity to explore all the subtle sound possibilities that the guitar could create and then orchestrate them together for his pieces. This will be his 4th appearance here with MFGS and his following has grown exponentially. Pino will bring 2 other amazing guitarists from Italy with him, Stefano Barone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YE-GPXYeTA&fmt=18
and Sergio Altamura. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xr4YRsa5DPo&fmt=18 Combine Pino’s exquisite phrasing with Stefano’s interwoven crisp percussion and harmonics and then add Sergio’s beyond progressive, yet evocative use of the guitar & electronics and you will witness a remarkable night of musical artistry by Guitar Republic. This is their first performance outside of Rome and MFGS is honored to introduce Guitar Republic to the States. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCQCkcqTgqA&fmt=18
May 15th, Laurence Juber

@ MAMA's Coffeehouse, Birmingham Unitarian Church, Bloomfield Hills.
MFGS teams up with our friends @ MAMA’s Coffeehouse http://www.mamascoffeehouse.org/ to present 2 time Grammy Winner Laurence Juber. Laurence Juber was hand picked to join Paul McCartney’s ‘Wings’ band as lead guitarist. After the band broke up Laurence embarked on a career path of solo fingerstyle composer and guitarist. He is one of the elite fingerstyle guitarists in the world today. Laurence has recorded over 20 albums, over 80 recordings with others and has composed music for stage, television and movies. With his original compositions, his stunning covers of Beatles tunes and his musings on his storied relationship with some of the remarkable musicians of his time he is not one to miss. http://www.laurencejuber.com/
As part of MFGS's mission, all performers will sponsor a guitar workshop prior to their performances. These workshops are open to all levels of players. It is difficult to precisley learn a specific piece or technique in a 2 hour workshop yet it is impossible not to be motivated to improve your abilities in techniques or theory by attending one. These are opportunities to spend a couple hours with some of the most accomplished guitarists in the world today. For more information on these concerts or workshops please call MFGS @ 248-646-4030

April 17th – We bring back our Italian virtuoso friend Pino Forastiere along with his compatriots Stefano Barone & Sergio Altamura. Each one of these Candyrat Recording Artists www.candyrat.com could single handedly put on an amazing performance but to have all three of them together is more than impressive. Their music is both progressive and perhaps even bordering on experimental at times, yet they also have the ability to weave some stunningly beautiful music too!

| | | LIVE PERFORMANCE AND PICKING PARTY DECEMBER 6TH- Ron Stavale [ 11/18/2009 - 16:56 ] # On Sunday, December 6, 2009 fingerstyle guitarist JB Davies www.JBDavies.com will perform at Dessert Oasis, Rochester’s hip new coffee house! JB’s style is a broad representation of cutting edge fingerstyle guitar. Most of the tunes utilize alternate tunings. His technique includes the heavy use of tapping, slapping, two handed playing over the top of the guitar and the use of the guitar as a percussive instrument.
A MFGS Picking Party will follow the performance. Come bring your guitar, play a few tunes, listen to a few tunes and commiserate with some of the area’s fingerstyle guitarists! This event is for guitarists at all levels of play and the picking party crowd is a very supportive non competative group. The Michigan Fingerstyle Guitar Society (www.Fingerstyle.org) is a charitable organization that promotes the appreciation of fingerstyle guitar through concerts, workshops and goodwill.
